What it is
Nanoclad, the manufacturer, describes Roof Shield as a water-based nano-silica roof treatment and is blunt about what it is not: “Nanoclad is not paint. It is not a cosmetic coating. It is not a replacement for a failed roof.” That is exactly how we sell it: a preservation treatment for asphalt shingle roofs that still have serviceable life remaining, and nothing else.
The manufacturer’s published mechanism has three stages. First, millions of nanoparticles “soak deep into the material, not just the surface.” Second, those nanoparticles “fill micro crevices, forming strong chemical bonds within the material.” Third, the result is described as “a stronger, UV resistant, hydrophobic surface with an extended lifespan.” Nanoclad says Roof Shield reinforces shingles “from within” rather than laying a film on top of them — the practical difference between this and a conventional roll-on coating.
Because it works inside the shingle instead of over it, Nanoclad states its coatings are invisible and breathable — they “allow air molecules to pass through the surface” and “expand and contract with the underlying material” without changing how the surface looks. There are no product colours to pick, because there is no colour layer. The manufacturer describes the formulation as “proprietary, non-toxic” and “safe for people, pets, plants.”
For a Calgary roof, the water and temperature claims matter most. Nanoclad states Roof Shield creates “a seamless barrier that repels water and prevents freeze/thaw damage,” lists “Water, Ice, and Freeze-Thaw Cycles” and “Excessive Heat” among the exposures it guards against, and says the effect is visible on site: “water beads and sheds from the surface rather than soaking in.” A shingle that absorbs less water has less water inside it to freeze and crack when a chinook drops the temperature overnight.
Step one of Nanoclad’s own process is an inspection confirming the roof qualifies. Free, no obligation, and we say so if it does not.
The manufacturer claims reduced water absorption and a barrier that “prevents freeze/thaw damage” — the failure mode Alberta shingles die of.
Nanoclad states it helps protect against UV-related degradation, supports granule retention, and “improves your roof’s reflection of harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays.”

How it’s applied
Nanoclad publishes a four-step sequence: inspection, roof tune-up, application by certified installers, then a return visit to confirm performance. We follow that order, and the tune-up is the step most people underestimate — debris removal, sealing small cracks and exposed nails, and securing roof fixtures with neoprene washer screws before any product goes down.
Nanoclad does not publish a cure time or an application temperature window, so we will not invent one for you. We schedule conservatively for Alberta instead: dry surface, settled weather, and enough season left that nothing gets rushed. We would rather book you in June than push a late-autumn application.

Nanoclad publishes that Roof Shield extends roof life by 10 to 15 years on asphalt, shake and tile roofs, with warranty options up to 15 years and eligibility set by a free inspection. It also claims the treatment increases asphalt shingle hail resistance by two classes, reduces heat absorption and therefore cooling energy use, and keeps 10,000 to 15,000 pounds of tear-off waste out of the landfill versus a full replacement. Those are the manufacturer’s numbers and warranty, not a Mountain Standard guarantee.
What Nanoclad does not publish, we do not repeat. There is no stated cure time, no application or service temperature range, and no VOC figure on their material. No ASTM, UL or other third-party rating is assigned to Roof Shield either — Nanoclad’s own article on ratings walks through UL 2218 Class 4 impact, ASTM D3161 wind and UL 790 fire classes as shingle standards and pointedly claims none of them for the product. If a contractor tells you a treatment is Class 4 rated, ask to see the listing.

On a 24-year-old roof with widespread granule loss and brittle tabs, we will quote a replacement instead.
