Cochrane sits 18 km west of Calgary's city limits, right where the prairie meets the foothills. That location gives it the strongest chinook wind exposure of any town we serve — and Environment Canada measured 5.1 cm hail in Cochrane during the August 5, 2024 storm as well.
The town has grown from 17,580 people in 2011 to 32,199 in the 2021 census, an 83 percent increase in a decade, and most of that growth went into hillside subdivisions with long open sightlines to the west. Sunset Ridge, Heartland, Fireside, Riversong, Precedence, Greystone, Rivercrest and Jumping Pound Ridge are exposed in a way that Calgary's interior neighbourhoods simply are not. Wind coming off the Bow valley and down out of the foothills hits those roofs directly, and the failures we find reflect it: lifted and missing ridge caps, wind-creased field shingles, torn edge metal, and starter courses that were nailed high and have been working loose ever since.

How we work in Cochrane
On a Cochrane hillside roof, the west and southwest slopes take the wind and the driving rain, and they age visibly faster than the sheltered side of the same house. We start there, then check the ridge, hips and rakes, because those edges are where uplift begins before it takes the field shingles with it.
We also check the fasteners. A roof that was nailed a half inch too high — a common production shortcut — will hold fine in Calgary's interior and start shedding tabs in Cochrane's wind within five years. That is a workmanship issue, not a material issue, and it is one of the most common things we find here.

Cochrane gets the chinook before Calgary does. Warm air spilling over the Rockies hits Cochrane first, which means more freeze-thaw cycles per winter and more aggressive melt-refreeze behaviour on roofs. Every cycle drives meltwater down to the cold overhang, refreezes it into an ice ridge, and pushes water back under the shingle course above. On the 1970s and 1980s stock around Glenbow and Cochrane Heights, where attic insulation and soffit venting were never upgraded, this is the number one cause of the ceiling stains we get called about.
The fix is rarely more shingles. It is air sealing the ceiling plane, getting insulation depth up toward R-50, installing baffles so blown insulation is not choking the soffit intake, and balancing intake against exhaust so the attic runs cold. On a re-roof we do that work at the same time, which is by far the cheapest moment for it.
Snow load matters too, more here than in the city, because Cochrane's elevation and foothills position mean heavier accumulation on north-facing slopes that never see winter sun. On low-slope additions and carports we look hard at deck deflection and drainage, and on metal roofs we place snow retention deliberately so a mid-February release does not come down on the front step.
