Strathmore sits 50 km east of Calgary on the Trans-Canada, surrounded by Wheatland County farmland. There is no topography and no tree cover to break the wind, and the summer thunderstorms that build over the foothills roll straight east across this town with hail in them.
Strathmore is a town of 14,339 people as of the 2021 census, and it grew in two distinct pushes: a 91 percent jump between 1976 and 1981, then a sustained run through the 2000s where it went from 7,621 people in 2001 to 12,305 in 2011. The late-1970s and 1980s core has original-era venting, narrow soffits, more low-slope additions and attics that have never been properly topped up. For agricultural buildings, exposed-fastener steel panel is still the workhorse, and it is a good product when it is installed right. The two things that end steel roofs early out here are fastener backout — screws that loosen with thermal cycling until the washers no longer seal — and end-lap and ridge detailing that was rushed. Both are repairable, and a screw-down retrofit on an otherwise sound shed roof is dramatically cheaper than replacing it. We will always quote the repair when the repair is real.
Snow behaviour is worth planning for. Strathmore's flat prairie means drifting rather than uniform accumulation, so snow piles unevenly against parapets, on the lee side of ridge lines, and against roof-mounted equipment. That concentrated load and the meltwater that comes off it is where low-slope commercial roofs in town start leaking. On flat and low-slope work we look at drainage and secondary overflow before anything else.
The last factor is distance from a supplier. When a roof fails in Strathmore, the same-day parts run that is trivial in Calgary is an hour and a half round trip. We plan material orders with a margin so a job does not sit half-open waiting for a delivery, and that is one of the practical reasons a Calgary contractor who actually works this corridor beats one who visits it occasionally.
