Siding in a hail city
Roofs get inspected after a storm. Siding often does not — and in the two biggest Calgary hail events of the last decade, wall damage was as widespread as roof damage. Cracked and holed vinyl on the storm-facing elevation is the most commonly missed part of a claim.
The June 13, 2020 storm stripped siding off entire streets in northeast Calgary, in Saddle Ridge, Taradale and Skyview, along with Airdrie and Rocky View County, at a cost of roughly $1.2 to $1.5 billion in insured damage. On August 5, 2024, the worst damage ran through the far north and northwest — Coventry Hills, Panorama Hills, Evanston — with reports of widespread severe siding damage and multiple broken windows per street, in an event that reached about $3.3 billion in insured losses. Both times, the wall damage on north and west elevations was routinely under-scoped on the first pass.
We recommend by elevation. Fibre cement or engineered wood where the storms hit, and honest advice about where vinyl is still the sensible choice.

How we work
Siding is a water management system, not a decorative skin. Behind the boards there needs to be a continuous water-resistive barrier, correctly lapped, with flashing at every window head, door, deck ledger and penetration, and a way for any water that gets in to drain back out. Skip those and the pretty new wall is hiding rot within five years.
We also stage the job so your house is never left open overnight. On a full re-side we work elevation by elevation, and we plan around the fact that Calgary can deliver a rain or hail event in the middle of a July afternoon with no warning.

Fibre cement (James Hardie is the best-known brand) is the most hail-tolerant mainstream option available here. It resists impact far better than vinyl, it will not melt or warp near a barbecue, it is non-combustible, and factory-finished colour holds up well in Alberta UV. The trade-offs are cost, weight and installation skill — it needs correct fastening, correct clearances at grade and roof lines, and proper cutting practice, so an inexperienced crew can compromise a premium product.
Vinyl is still the volume material in Calgary and it has a place. Modern insulated vinyl adds a little wall R-value and hides sheathing imperfections, and on a sheltered elevation it can serve for decades. But standard vinyl becomes brittle at −25 °C, and hail cracks brittle material. If your west or north wall has been claimed twice, replacing it with the same product is choosing to do this again.
Engineered wood sits in between: lighter than fibre cement, better impact performance than vinyl, warmer looking, and it takes paint well. It demands disciplined attention to cut edges and moisture detailing. On storm-facing elevations, usually yes. It resists hail far better than vinyl, holds colour through Alberta UV, and it is non-combustible. On a sheltered rear wall, insulated vinyl may be the smarter spend.
Coverage is your insurer's call, but hail-damaged siding is frequently covered and just as frequently missed on the first inspection. We document the damage for your adjuster so the scope reflects what is actually there.
Often, on newer homes. Older vinyl profiles and discontinued colours can be difficult, and UV fading means new panels rarely match perfectly. We will tell you honestly before you pay for a patch that will stand out.
