The arithmetic is straightforward. An asphalt shingle roof in Calgary realistically delivers 15 to 25 years, and a serious hail event can end it at year eight. A 26- or 24-gauge steel roof, correctly installed, runs 40 to 50 years and normally survives storms that write off the shingle roof next door. Our process
Metal roofing is unforgiving of sloppy work. Panels have to be set square, clips spaced to spec, and every valley, sidewall, chimney and pipe boot flashed as a designed assembly rather than sealed with caulking. Get the details right and the roof outlives the mortgage. Get them wrong and it leaks in three years with no easy patch.

Metal typically runs somewhere around two to three times the cost of an architectural asphalt shingle roof on the same house, and the spread depends on more than square footage. Profile is the biggest factor: exposed-fastener panel is the cheapest, pressed steel shingle sits in the middle, and site-formed standing seam is the premium. Gauge matters, finish system matters, and roof complexity matters most of all — every valley, dormer and skylight adds hand-formed flashing labour.
Alberta code and permitting are worth understanding before you commit. Work in Alberta falls under the National Building Code – 2023 Alberta Edition, in force since May 1, 2024. In Calgary, most like-for-like storm repair and re-covering work does not require a development or building permit, but changing the roof assembly, deck or structure can, and a change from asphalt to metal sometimes triggers a review of the deck and attachment. Not on a house. It is installed over solid sheathing, underlayment and an insulated attic, so it is comparable to shingles. The noise reputation comes from uninsulated barns and shops with no deck under the panels.
A severe event can leave cosmetic dents, particularly on lower-gauge panels. The important part is that steel keeps shedding water after a storm that fractures shingle mats, so you are not looking at a leak or a claim.
