A shingle's wind rating is measured under test conditions, and the number on the bundle assumes it is installed exactly to spec. In practice, most uplift failures we open up in this corridor trace to three shortcuts: nails driven high above the nailing strip so the tab above is not captured, four nails where six were required for the exposure, and a starter course that was cut from field shingles instead of using a sealed starter strip. Any of those is survivable in a sheltered Calgary neighbourhood. None of them survive out here.
