In most Canadian cities siding is a curb-appeal decision. In Calgary it is a hail decision first and a curb-appeal decision second. Here is what vinyl, James Hardie fibre cement, engineered wood and metal actually cost installed in 2026, how each one handles hail, and what "installed to spec" means when the box says James Hardie.
The Insurance Bureau of Canada reported the 5 August 2024 Calgary hailstorm at nearly $2.8 billion in insured losses — the second-costliest event in Canadian history at the time — with almost one in five Calgary homes affected and more than 130,000 claims. The same Insurance Bureau of Canada report notes the 2020 Calgary hailstorm at over $1.2 billion and the 2021 storm at $700 million. That is three billion-dollar-class hail seasons in five years, in one city.
The Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction is direct about the siding consequence. Its hail resilience guidance, S1: No Vinyl Siding, states that damage surveys after recent hail events show vinyl siding is particularly vulnerable, and recommends not installing it unless it can be shown to pass the UL 2218 / FM 4473 Class 4 hail impact test with no damage or cracking, or complies with TAS 201 large missile resistance. Its listed alternatives are fibre cement, engineered wood, wood, stucco, steel, brick and stone.
ICLR also flags that aluminium, while better than vinyl, is still vulnerable to denting in a major hail event — and that even the better materials may not be considered "resilient" by an insurer because they can still take cosmetic damage under heavy hail. Worth asking your broker about before you choose.

Rule of thumb for a typical Calgary two-storey: vinyl lands in the high teens, Hardie lands in the low-to-mid thirties, and the gap narrows once you add soffit, fascia and eavestrough on both quotes. How much does siding cost in Calgary in 2026?
Installed Calgary ranges run about $7 to $10 per square foot for standard vinyl, $12 to $17 for engineered wood, $14 to $21 for James Hardie fibre cement and $14 to $23 for steel. On a typical two-storey with roughly 2,000 square feet of wall that is about $14,000 to $20,000 in vinyl versus $28,000 to $42,000 in Hardie, before soffit, fascia and eavestrough.
Is James Hardie worth the extra cost over vinyl in Calgary?
In a hail city, usually yes. The Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction recommends against vinyl siding because damage surveys show it is particularly vulnerable to hail, and lists fibre cement among its preferred alternatives. Hardie also carries a 15-year limited ColorPlus finish warranty and is non-combustible. The trade-off is roughly double the installed price.
What siding holds up best to Alberta hail?
Steel performs best structurally, followed by fibre cement and engineered wood. Aluminium is better than vinyl but still dents in a major storm. ICLR notes even the better materials can take cosmetic damage under heavy hail, so ask your insurance broker which products they treat as resilient and whether any discount applies.
What does James Hardie require for a compliant installation?
Key items from James Hardie's own guidance: 6 inches minimum clearance to grade, 2 inches to a slab or the highest point of decking, half an inch from trim to horizontal surfaces, 1 inch between gutter and siding, a quarter-inch gap at flashings that is deliberately left uncaulked, an eighth-inch caulked gap at side trim, kickout flashing at roof-to-wall junctions, sealed cut edges and a permanently flexible sealant meeting ASTM C920 Class 25 or ASTM C834.
Does siding fade in the Calgary sun?
Yes, especially on south and west elevations. Vinyl colour runs through the material so a faded panel cannot be repainted convincingly, and matching a discontinued colour years later is difficult. Factory-finished fibre cement and steel hold colour better, and fibre cement can be repainted later, though repainting James Hardie ColorPlus before the 15-year finish warranty expires voids that warranty.
Do I need a permit to replace siding in Calgary?
Often not for a like-for-like replacement. City of Calgary permit guidance for exterior home wrap says no permit is needed when replacing like-for-like material, but a building permit is required when the material changes, and exterior wall insulation added under new siding requires a building permit. Confirm your specific scope with the City before work starts.
