Calgary sits in the middle of Hailstorm Alley. A Class 4 shingle is the highest impact rating an asphalt shingle can earn, and it is what we recommend on most Calgary re-roofs. Here is what the rating means, what we install, and what to ask your insurer.

Short version: if you are replacing a roof in Calgary, Airdrie, Okotoks or anywhere in the hail belt, price a Class 4 shingle. It costs a little more, it handles hail better than a standard shingle, and it may qualify you for an insurance discount. See every major storm since 2014 on our Calgary hail map.

What Class 4 actually means
Shingles are rated for impact under a lab standard called UL 2218. The test drops steel balls from 1.25 to 2 inches across onto the shingle. To earn Class 4, the top rating, a two inch steel ball is dropped twice from 20 feet onto the same spot and the shingle cannot crack through to the mat (GAF). Some products also carry an FM 4473 Class 4 rating, a second impact test.
Be clear about what that does and does not mean. Class 4 means the shingle resisted a controlled lab impact. It does not mean hail can never damage your roof, and manufacturers say so: IKO notes that its impact rating is not a guarantee against hail and is not covered under the limited warranty (IKO Nordic brochure). We will never tell you hail cannot damage your roof.

IKO Nordic
IKO's top architectural line, made with polymer modified asphalt for a rubber like flex under impact, with a wide nailing zone
We also install Malarkey Windsor for homeowners who want a designer look. Whatever you pick, the product name, colour and manufacturer warranty are written into your proposal.
Why polymer modified shingles handle hail better
A standard architectural shingle uses oxidized asphalt that gets stiffer and more brittle as it ages and freezes. A polymer modified shingle has rubber like polymers (SBS) blended into the asphalt, so it flexes under a hit instead of cracking, and it stays flexible in a Calgary January. That is the main reason these products earn Class 4 without looking any different from a regular laminate shingle.
What a Class 4 roof costs in Calgary
Most Calgary asphalt re-roofs land between $7,300 and $14,400 in 2026, depending on size, pitch, layers and the shingle (see our Calgary roof replacement cost guide). Moving to a Class 4 shingle usually adds roughly a dollar per square foot over a standard architectural shingle, about $2,000 on a typical home. We quote both options side by side so you can see the exact difference on your roof.
Class 4 and your home insurance
A Class 4 roof may qualify for an insurance discount. Many Alberta insurers offer a premium credit for a documented impact rated roof, but it is not automatic, not universal and the size varies by insurer and property (MyBrokers.ca). Check with your insurer or broker before you choose. What they usually want to see:
An invoice that names the manufacturer, the product line and the UL 2218 Class 4 rating
The installation date and the address
Photos of the finished roof and, ideally, the shingle wrappers
We give you all three at the end of every Class 4 job so you can send them straight to your broker.
Upgrading to Class 4 during a hail claim
If hail has already damaged your roof, your policy normally pays to replace it with like kind and quality. Moving up to a Class 4 shingle is usually a small difference you pay yourself. We document the damage, help with the paperwork and meet your adjuster if needed, and we show the upgrade as its own line so nothing gets mixed into the claim. We never waive, cover or pay a deductible. Read the Alberta roof insurance claim guide for how claims pay.
How we install a Class 4 roof
Full tear off to the deck and a deck inspection, with any rotten sheets shown to you and approved before replacement
Ice and water protection at eaves and valleys, synthetic underlayment, new drip edge and flashings
Ventilation checked and balanced, because an overheated attic shortens any shingle's life
Manufacturer installation and nailing pattern followed so the rating and the warranty hold
Cleanup, magnet sweep, final owner inspection, and a lifetime workmanship warranty in writing
Class 4 is the highest rating under the UL 2218 impact test. A two inch steel ball is dropped from 20 feet onto the same spot on the shingle, and to pass, the shingle cannot crack through. It is a lab rating, not a promise that a roof can never be damaged.
Which Class 4 shingles does MSR install?
Our main shingles are IKO Nordic and Malarkey Vista, both Class 4 rated by the manufacturer. We also install Malarkey Legacy and Windsor. We confirm the exact product and colour in your written proposal.
How much more does a Class 4 roof cost in Calgary?
On most Calgary homes the upgrade is roughly a dollar per square foot over a standard architectural shingle, about $2,000 on a typical roof. Your written quote shows the exact difference for your roof.
Will a Class 4 roof lower my home insurance?
It may. Many Alberta insurers offer a premium credit for a documented impact rated roof, but it is not automatic and the amount varies. Check with your insurer or broker before you choose, and keep the invoice that names the product and its Class 4 rating.
Can I get Class 4 shingles through a hail claim?
Your policy pays for like kind and quality, so an upgrade to Class 4 is often a small out of pocket difference you pay yourself. We document the damage and help with the paperwork, and we show the upgrade cost as a separate line so it is clear.
Do Class 4 shingles look different?
No. IKO Nordic and Malarkey Vista are architectural shingles in the same dimensional style as standard laminates, with a full range of colours. Most neighbours will not know the difference.
